The Barbershop storybook Project

I served as the co-artistic lead as writer, and original illustrator of the renowned Barbershop Storybook Project. This project is an arts initiative created by the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity.

The Barbershop Storybook Project emphasized human-centered design by focalizing the stories of those we interviewed. In each storyline, we aimed to address the COVID vaccine hesitancy and wonted distrust of medical institutions in the Black community by using Prince George’s County as a case study. This project allowed us to create a platform where these critical voices could be heard and their experiences could be shared through powerful storytelling.

For these events, I was responsible for casting, directing rehearsal, and event management. I also created and managed the budget for this event along with my collaborator and co-artistic lead, Marcus Ford. For the Woolly Mammoth reading, we were able to contract a Black American Sign language Interpreter, to increase accessibility to the event.
